Katikati's Garth Amrein has never been so fit as right now.
Mind you, the young athlete needs to be at the absolute peak of physical fitness if he's to stand a chance against the cream of the motocross world in Taupo this weekend (August 15-16).
Amrein was last month selected as part of the official New Zealand squad to tackle the Roadcraft FIM Junior Motocross World Championship in Taupo and he's really responded to the challenge.
The 13-year-old Yamaha ace has worked extremely hard on building up his strength and his flexibility and declared this week that he was the fittest he's ever been.
"I'm riding a virtually stock standard Yamaha YZ85 at the world champs. All we've done is put an after-market Pro Circuit exhaust pipe on it," said Amrein.
"This will be the biggest event I've ever done in my life and I'm pretty excited about it.
"I have been talking with (Subway Yamaha Team boss and former GP racer) Darryll King a lot and I've been training with him. I have learned a lot from him."
The Katikati College third-form student has already been a champion on the domestic scene, winning a national mini motocross title in 2003, as well as his class at major events like the big Queens Birthday meeting at Tokoroa in 2008 and this year.
But now he's going to be on a true world stage and he realises that is a huge step up.
"I look up to people like (Kiwi international motocross racer) Ben Townley and see what they have done with their careers.
"He's really put New Zealand on the map and now that's what I want to do too."
