A Queensland man almost had a very nasty surprise while he was out gardening on Wednesday.

Reddit user Evadregand shared an image of a snake lying flat next to his garden hose in the early hours of the morning.

He explained on the social media site he initially thought it was just a fallen branch, according to Daily Mail.

"But as the eyes cleared at 6am this morning it was apparent it was no branch," he wrote.

The snake, which appeared to be a coastal carpet python, was lying in the grass close to a green hose.

In the dim light of the morning, the snake could easily have been mistaken for a stick.

The man says he and his partner estimated the snake to be about 2m long.

"The missus wanted me to lie down next to him to 'measure' it," he joked.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Evadregand for comment.
