Spain's Prado picks Norman Foster firm for major extension

MADRID (AP) " Spain's Prado Museum has selected a team headed by British architect Norman Foster and Spain's Carlos Rubio to carry out a 32 million euro ($34 million) refurbishment of a 17th century palace to extend the gallery.

Government spokesman Inigo Mendez de Vigo said Friday the Hall of Realms renovation project would boost Madrid as one of Europe's top art centers.

The building, which once formed part of the now-destroyed Buen Retiro Palace, is located between the Prado and the Retiro park. It housed the Army Museum until 2005.

The Prado, which is considered to have the world's richest store of pre-20th century masters, hopes to conclude the renovation in 2019 when it celebrates its 200th anniversary.

Foster + Partners will carry out the project along with the Rubio Arquitectura firm.
