Fashion: Shine on

Light-reflecting fabrics infused with metallic threads or shimmering paillettes - what better way to stand out at after-five events? The night sky provides a great backdrop to high-octane, high-shine fabrics.

Then again, with fashion's penchant for high-low mixing, special fabrics can be worn during the day, pared-back with your favourite knit for an inspired take on trans-seasonal dressing. Several designers have explored gleaming fabrics such as Lurex, jacquards and brocades, the latter's intricate pattern also recognising the current obsession with classical motifs.

What's more, there are plenty of subtle accessories to dip your toes into, from the iridescent jewellery options by Jean Paul Gaultier for Swarovski to the metallic ankle boots at Runway by McQ Alexander McQueen.
