Chocoholics rejoice - Easter is just two weeks away. Kiwis are set to devour more than 5 million chocolate sensations between now and then.
And as the battle heats up for sweet-toothed chocolate lovers across shopping aisles the length and breadth of New Zealand, the Herald on Sunday newsroom this week munched its way through some of the eggcellent offerings on sale. There's something for everyone.
Tiny but tasty
The Warehouse has an option for those who want to indulge and watch their weight - an egg barely one centimetre in length. The 140g packet of Walkers Milk Chocolate Tiny Eggs are brimming with colourfully coated chocolate morsels and cost $3 a packet.
No nuts allowed
The Kinnerton's dark chocolate range imported from the UK by The Warehouse is designed for devourers with food allergies. The products are free from everything that could cause problems, including nuts, dairy and gluten. A boxed dark chocolate hollow egg and 85g bar costs $22.
Chocolate Frenzy
If size means everything the "Biggy Piggy" is 1.2kg of chocolate decadence. Costing $40 and nearly 50cm long, the Waikato Valley Chocolate pig shouts gluttony and is available at The Warehouse. Countdown has the more traditional giant rabbit to eat. At nearly 30cm, the 900g Swiss milk chocolate bunny costs $30.
Sweet enough
To avoid sugar overload The Warehouse has included a new option of eggs with no added sugar. The 100g dark chocolate Richfields eggs are $5 of indulgence.
Money's no object
Devonport Chocolates has a range of individually handcrafted eggs with a price tag fitting a bespoke creation. The 400g hollow eggs cost $49.90. The three different designs include marbled white chocolate swirled with gold leaf, and dark chocolate eggs with either spots and stripes.
