Books about New Zealand and New Zealanders are tipped to top the list when it comes to reading material for the Christmas stocking.
Local cookbooks, biographies and sports books are outselling their imported rivals, according to Blue Star Consumer Retailing which owns book giant Whitcoulls.
General manager Fran Stanley says Keith Quinn's A Lucky Man will top the sports list, with Janet Frame for something unusual, while the top kids' choice is likely to be Harry Potter.
She says chef Annabel Langbein will top the lifestyle section.
And a book may be just the thing for the big day – drizzly weather is forecast for much of the country, with the high winds which battered Central Otago on Sunday expected to move up the country over Christmas Day.
Police warn motorists in Central Otago to take care, especially if they are towing trailers or caravans, as wind gusts reach up to 85 km/h.
Metservice forecaster Sarah de Denne says strong nor-westerly winds tonight and early tomorrow could reach speeds of up to 110 km/h an hour in inland parts of Canterbury and Marlborough.
She says the weather will be murky on the west coast of the North Island tomorrow, with north-west winds hitting the east coast of both islands.
Up to 120mm of rain is expected in Westland overnight.
