AMP Office Trust will build a 32-level tower on the site of the Downtown Airline Terminal and Downtown Convention Centre on the corner of Albert and Quay Sts in Auckland.
This is the biggest development announced for the city since work started on the $200 million Royal & SunAlliance Centre in Shortland St, a 40-level tower with a halo on the top.
That tower was topped off in August last year, although construction will not finish until September.
The AMP skyscraper, to be called Waterfront Towers, will include carparks, a spacious plaza and 26 levels of offices. The development will not include a convention or conference facility.
Demolition work will soon begin on the airline terminal and convention centre. The centre catered for 1500 people on its first floor and 400 on the ground floor.
AMP owns $413 million worth of buildings in New Zealand, but has $1.4 billion under management.
The trust reported a net profit of $16.4 million in late February. Its prime CBD office buildings in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch were 97.4 per cent leased.
