Veteran New Zealand prop Kylie Leuluai has ended a stellar English rugby league career by helping the Leeds Rhinos to a gripping 22-20 Super League grand final win over Wigan at Old Trafford Stadium in Manchester this morning.
It was Leuluai's sixth Super League title with Leeds and the perfect end to his playing career after joining the Rhinos from Manly in 2007. He has not lost a single decider he has played in for the club and the Auckland-born 37-year-old is now officially the Rhinos' most successful overseas player.
He could also possibly lay claim to being New Zealand's most successful league export, having won six Super League titles, and the Challenge Cup, League Leaders' Shield and World Club Challenge twice each.
The Rhinos' victory over Wigan also helped them see off in two other club legends in former Great Britain and England international pair Jamie Peacock and Kevin Sinfield who joined Leuluai in making their final appearance for the club.
It also helped complete a domestic treble for Brian McDermott's side, adding to the League Leaders' Shield and Challenge Cup.
Despite twice trailing the Rhinos fought back, with Danny McGuire scoring two of four tries, the last of which was by 20-year-old Josh Walters. Joe Burgess, Dom Manfredi and Matty Bowen all went over for Wigan.
In completing their triple trophy bid, Leeds emulate St Helens' feats of 2006 - and become the first club since.
It was also a victory for rugby league before a 73,512 record attendance for a grand final at Old Trafford, despite the presence of England's rugby union side just a few kilometres away playing Uruguay at the Etihad Stadium.
Cheekily, league officials rented a mobile billboard outside Old Trafford of former NRL star Sam Burgess in an English rugby shirt. It read: "I'm a rugby league player. Get me out of here!' and featured Burgess with a sign reading "Old Trafford" photoshopped in.
