Biography

Kirsty Johnston is an investigative reporter at the New Zealand Herald. She has a strong interest in education, data journalism, multimedia storytelling and social justice issues. Kirsty won a national Best Investigation award in 2014 for a series of stories about the treatment of intellectually disabled people in care homes. Her journalism career started at a regional paper in Taranaki in 2008, before moving through online and Sundays reporting. She has written everything from cat-up-a-tree yarns to long reads on national events such as the Christchurch earthquakes and the Carterton Balloon tragedy. Kirsty has a Graduate Diploma of Journalism from Massey University.
