A team of 30 first-time models from Charles Fleming Retirement Village lit up the catwalk in Waikanae last week, modelling bright new uniforms designed by well-known New Zealand fashion designer Annah Stretton.
The Waikanae village was 11th on the tour of 26 villages to get the new garments, which were designed to be beautiful as well as functional for Ryman Healthcare's 4000 staff.
Ms Stretton, who said it was a great pleasure to design uniforms for the aged care industry, designed new looks for all staff, from caregivers and nurses through to gardeners.
"We wanted garments that brought a smile to the faces of residents, increased the level of pride in what staff wear and emphasised the vital role they play in residents' lives," she said.
Hospital activities coordinator Mariela Durnhofer said the new uniforms' vibrancy and colour helped the residents to engage with staff.
"If you're looking great they feel that and it helps the residents to connect more with you."
Village resident Peggy Foote said she enjoyed the catwalk show, describing the uniform designs as "well thought out and beautiful".
"They're very glamorous," Ms Foote said.
"The staff looked so stunning and they acted so well on the catwalk.
"Not many people get to have their hair and make-up done at work and then go on the catwalk."
As well as looking visually appealing, the uniforms were made of lighter materials for staff working in kitchens and laundries.
In addition, a much anticipated change was the introduction of three-quarter length trousers for caregivers and housekeepers instead of dresses.
Managing director Simon Challies said the uniforms were developed in response to requests from staff.
"Annah's designs were a radical departure for Ryman, which is exactly what staff were after.
"We love the designs Annah came up with.
"The reaction from staff has been tremendous and they're putting a whole lot of smiles on the faces of residents."
