Many will know John Hawkesby from his days on the telly as one of the country's top broadcasters. But in recent years, Hawkesby has turned his talents to winemaking, setting up a winery on Waiheke Island where he lives with his wife Joyce. "I’ve got the world’s smallest vineyard, but there’s just enough to make wine that I give to our family and friends," he says. His winemaking knowledge and talents, and his passion for drinking the stuff, make him one of the country's top wine critics. He enjoys introducing Canvas Magazine readers to new wines and wine styles through his weekly column.
