The Burmese parliament welcomed Prime Minister John Key to the galleries today in an impromptu visit to a sitting of the lower house of representatives in the capital Naypyitaw.

The constitution reserves a quarter of the seats in the 300-strong for the military.

Earlier he paid a courtesy call to the speaker, U Shwe Mann, whom observers expect to stand in the presidential elections in 2015.

He used to be number three in the military as chief of staff in the military government before turning civilian politician.

They talked house procedure and structure, rather than politics.
