A programme of free and fun events is on offer in Levin next week to celebrate and promote adult literacy.
Organised by Arohamai Literacy Horowhenua, the events are designed to show people that literacy is about far more than just books. It is about taking control of your life, achieving goals and being in charge of your own learning, the organisation says.
Literacy Week launches on Monday at Te Takere at 10am and includes morning tea, followed by a fun quiz at 11am with the theme Around Aotearoa.
On Tuesday, a demonstration Te Reo Maori class will be held at Te Takere from 10am to 11am, followed by a Pizza and Pop Party from 12pm to 1pm, with a movie and gaming.
A reading group facilitated by tutor Daniel Bulman will stay at the library for their regular session at 1pm.
Mr Bulman said the group included lots of fun activities including literacy games and fun.
On Wednesday, anyone wanting help to prepare for their learner's driving licence could attend a 10am session, where games and activities would turn study into fun, with a practical outcome.
On Thursday, an Amazing Race starts from Te Takere at 11.30am.
Mr Bulman said it was a treasure hunt designed to show how literacy is not just words in books, but learning how to follow instructions, read maps and all kinds of other examples in day-to-day life where improving your literacy can help.
"We're hoping that people will understand that literacy is in their lives - not just in a book," he said.
All the events will be held at Te Takere and are free, and anyone is invited to just turn up and join in.
