Levin kids have their 'hang zone' secured with a new committee stepping up to ensure Centre Skate is around for another generation.
About three months ago the future of this popular Friday night activity, running since the 1980s, hung in the balance as funds ran out after the committee member responsible for making funding applications left.
Word spread among the wider skating fraternity and a new committee was formed in May, headed by president Pauline Phillips.
"Quite simply, we didn't want to see Centre Skate close down," she said.
The committee has already secured $4000 of funding from Central and Eastern, to pay for much-needed new skates, and are waiting on further funding to cover rent and new t-shirts for staff and volunteers.
The new committee has not been idle on the activity front either, organising monthly theme nights, the first a 'PJ/Onesie' night with a 'Crazy Hat' night to follow, and planned displays from various skating codes, such as inline hockey which will be this Friday at 7pm.
"It's to give the kids an idea of what else they can do on skates, and something different to watch," said Mrs Phillips.
Centre Skate attracts about 100 children every Friday night on average, and could accommodate almost double that once they have the new skates. Centre manager Trish Grant said a lot of the kids knew what was happening and said 'you can't close'.
"So I told them, start bringing your friends down, we need more kids."
Mrs Phillips said there is a lot of optimism for the centre's future.
"The biggest thing at the moment is to get the message out that we're here and we're open."
Centre Skate is open each Friday from 6pm to 9pm at the Levin Events Centre, Victoria St. A typical night includes organised games and disco laser lighting from 8pm.
Birthdays can be booked with free room hire. Individual cost is $4 per person, $2 for skate hire (or bring own skates). The first Friday of the month is free skate hire.
There is also a loyalty card (pay for four get the fifth free) and a new concession ticket for families with three or more children ($50 for the month).
