Despite thunderstorms lashing both Hawke's Bay and Auckland yesterday, the weather is set to return to normal for the rest of the week.
At one stage gusts of wind up to 110 kmh were recorded at Hawke's Bay Airport, as well as 15mm of rain in one hour.
MetService meteorologist Josh Griffin said a combination of warm and humid air at the surface with cold air aloft created general instability in the atmosphere, which triggered the thunderstorms.
By yesterday afternoon, most of this convection had passed to the northeast and was making its way to Gisborne.
"Today, there will be an afternoon convection along the ranges, moreso in the Gisborne area than Hawke's Bay, with thunderstorms. It is not going to be similar to what we saw yesterday, it's going to be more toned down."
Looking ahead, Mr Griffin said the weather was looking "pretty fine" for the rest of the week.
"There is going to be some isolated afternoon and evening showers about the ranges throughout today and tomorrow."
For the next two days, temperatures will reach 30C, with today hitting 31C in Hastings.
On Friday, it will be fine at first, with cloud increase and a few showers developing from afternoon with a southerly change.
