That Bloody Woman; Tour-Makers. By Luke Di Somma & Gregory Cooper. Directed by Kip Chapman. Starring Westside's Esther Stephens as Kate Sheppard.
Kate's back! 2016's smash hit musical That Bloody Woman is coming to Napier on Tuesday, October 17, bringing this national treasure back to life in a nationwide campaign to rock the vote for this election.
Our favourite daughter, suffragist, activist and cyclist Kate Sheppard is transformed from the face on the $10 note into a feminist firebrand, raising hell and rocking out.
The show has great musical numbers, tongue-in-cheek asides and a prime minister who raps. That Bloody Woman showcases our ceiling-shattering history and asks us to consider whether we have come as far as we would like.
This musical, by Christchurch-born writers Luke Di Somma and Gregory Cooper, premièred at the 2015 Christchurch Arts Festival with a sold-out season for its fiery, fresh and funny take on Sheppard's fight to give women the vote.
Esther Stephens stars as Kate Sheppard and presents the heroine like you've never seen her before; loud, proud and in your face. Leading the charge to win women the vote, Kate takes on the patriarchy, public opinion and even Prime Minister Richard "King Dick" Seddon.
Auckland Live invited That Bloody Woman to join 2017's International Cabaret Season after the outstanding response to its debut. The rebooted production also earned rave reviews in Auckland.
