Families and carers of loved ones at Cranford Hospice are being offered a little more support with a course of person-centred workshops.
Caregiver support co-ordinator Rebecca Pimm is facilitating an eight-week programme to educate people about palliative care.
Rebecca said she saw a need as more people were being cared for in their own homes.
"Carers need support with what dying and death looks like," she said.
She also connects participants with other support networks in the community and is the 'go-to' person for any equipment needed, navigating people towards those in charge of equipment and care packages at Cranford.
"I look at what their needs are - some may be isolated so I may connect them with Sport HB or Age Concern.
"Others may have just moved here and want to find a group to join."
Self-care is an important subject covered during the workshops, run at Cranford so people can have a peer support network and meet others going through the same thing. This will also include a 'time-out' plan.
"They can learn about how to best support their loved one at home. People have found support in that."
Rebecca said the focus of workshops would be on using natural methods including tai chi, breathing techniques and mindfulness.
"I bring it all back down to the basics - one thing at a time. It's about being aware of where people are at on their journey - it's about what they want to know."
One of the sessions Rebecca is taking will focus on advanced care planning - talking about what people want at the end of their lives.
"It's about getting their affairs in order - it helps the carers initiate those conversations."
Rebecca said she set the topic in the first hour of each workshop and for the second hour "lets it flow".
"People have made connections. They have the feeling they're not alone."
