Keen-eyed youngsters have just a few more days to hunt some specially painted rocks dotted around Napier that are part of a local fire service safety promotion.
Napier senior firefighter Waka Petera said he jumped on the popular painted rock fever that's hit the region during the last few months, after hearing of similar activities in Palmerston North.
"It's one of those crazes that's gone a bit wild in Hawke's Bay and I saw it as another avenue to get the fire safety message out there."
He said he enlisted the help of the administrator of the Hawke's Bay Wandering Stones Facebook page to not only paint the rocks, but also spread the word to eagle-eyed collectors.
Six fire service stones were in circulation in Napier during April, decorated with colourful miniature paintings of fire engines, matchboxes, letterboxes, smoke alarms and fire extinguishers.
Mr Petera said he had been hiding them in places that children frequent such as skateparks and playgrounds, and had given hints on their locations on the wandering stones Facebook page.
"It's been a bit hard, I have been going out in late evening to hide them, I have had to get pretty sneaky.
"I was posting photos of where they are but I realised I was making it a bit obvious so I have changed the photos not to show their exact location."
Anyone who found the stones were encouraged to bring them into the Napier Fire Station where they would receive a goodie bag containing fire safety information, stickers and balloons, and go into the draw for a trip in a fire truck with two friends, accompanied by two firefighters, and taken out to lunch afterwards.
"We've had about 50 people enter the draw so far - it's been pretty cool and we've even had some responses from adults wanting to go and look."
The Napier promotion finishes at the end of this month, after which the Hastings Fire Service will run the same challenge in Hastings in May.
