An ablution solution is complete after the delivery of the third and fourth portable buildings at Hawke's Bay Showgrounds yesterday.
Funded by a $150,000 grant from the Eastern & Central Trust, they help complete stage one of a showgrounds development.
Hawke's Bay A & P Society general manager Brent Linn said the new buildings will join a 3km network of power, water and sewerage, with the first event to benefit being the Horse of the Year Show (HOY).
"It will provide an alternative to hired toilets and showers from other regions and save on the cost of daily pumping the portable units dry," he said.
"There are operational cost savings for HOY and an enhanced event experience for the patrons and volunteers.
"The buildings are 6m by 3m so we can transport them on a Hiab flat deck, both around the grounds and around the region."
They have tanks so can either be plumbed to a sewer or freestanding.
"It's a resource for the whole region. Some use will be of a commercial nature and some will be of a community nature."
Mr Linn said stage one of the capital upgrade was about supporting existing users, with improved fencing in place but an enhanced Karamu Rd entranceway was yet to be built.
"Stage two is around additional multi-use exhibition facilities that we hope can provide a solution for the Farmers Market's winter accommodation and also provide a solution for covered exhibition space."
He said most recent work on the showgrounds was primarily repair and maintenance, and, thanks to outside funding, the developments would take place without the society taking on debt.
"This is the first significant capital works project since probably the under-grounding of the electrical services and toilet block in the late '70s and early '80s," he said.
Mr Linn said the Karamu Rd fencing was of a higher standard than needed because "our funders felt it important our frontage had some presence".
