Two people have been airlifted to safety after being caught in a cold snap today in the Makaroro Valley, the area scheduled for the proposed Ruataniwha water storage dam.

Police reported a beacon was activated at 12.56pm in the Ruahine Range eastern foothills area between Sparrow Hawk Spur and Colenso Spur.

A couple reported that they were caught in some mist and were "extremely cold," said a police media officer.

The Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter Service was alerted and the couple were airlifted out of the area mid-afternoon. Further details were not immediately available.
