Detectives investigating the Monday night robbery of the Mobil Service Station on Taradale Rd, Napier, are following up several calls from members of the public who said they had been in the area at the time.

One of the calls was from a person who gave police part of a name of someone they said they were suspicious of.

"That is being checked out," Detective Sergeant Glenn Restieaux said.

The robbery took place about 9.30pm when a masked man, bearing a machete and carrying a large bag, entered the service station and demanded the sole male attendant hand over cash and cigarettes. At one stage the robber pushed the machete toward the man, causing a minor gash.

When a member of the public walked in, the offender ran off.

He was wearing a grey coloured hooded jacket, dark trousers and a dark woollen hat.

He was also wearing a face mask.
