An elderly man recovering from a heart attack was rescued by two men in Hastings who came to his aid after a scooter issue left him stranded in the middle of the road.
As cars whizzed past the 86-year-old, who wished to be known only as John, wondered how he was going to get out of the predicament - but he didn't have to ponder long.
Two "young men" who were parked up in a truck came to help - plucking him from the precarious spot to safety on the footpath.
They had nipped off to make a quick delivery before returning to ferry John and the scooter to his home.
Once back in his own driveway they had hopped in the cab and driven off before he had had time to give them anything in return.
"I'm saying, 'Thank you', but I'm so sorry I didn't say, 'Go get a couple of bottles of beer' ... You just don't get people like that in this day and age."
He believes damage to the front of his scooter must have come from "banging" into something.
It was his first outing on a nice day since leaving hospital, following a heart attack three weeks ago.
"In between the council and the library at the back there was a truck - they were looking at me. Next thing a man comes out and says, 'That's bad. How are we going to get you home'?"
It was no use calling a mobility taxi van as the driver would not have been able to move the damaged scooter alone.
As someone who grew up at a time when everyone knew everyone and chatting to neighbours was the norm, he appreciated the sentiment of young people reaching out to help a stranger in need. "They were absolutely wonderful. I just wanted to say thank you."
Known around town for his friendly greetings, John aims to encourage the community to get talking to one another.
"I have great-grandchildren and often I put one of them on the scooter", and away they would go.
They would say "Hello" to everyone. "People smiled and said 'Hello'. I taught him a lesson that day."
