An unexpected hail and lightning storm struck Hawke's Bay yesterday.
After the week of wet weather the Bay was set for a reprieve from yesterday - but the skies had other ideas.
The nine-day storm dropped more than 500mm of rain in some areas of Hawke's Bay - the highest amount in 20 years.
MetService meteorologist Tuporo Marsters said the region experienced 28 lightning strikes south of Hastings yesterday.
He said a cluster of showers that came in offshore about 3.30pm were met with rising heat, which caused the hail.
Department of Conservation ranger Rod Hansen said the large hailstorm hit the area of Pourerere Rd in Central Hawke's Bay, which made driving very slippery.
Today may see some heavy showers developing in the afternoon, accompanied by light winds.
"Some afternoon showers may be heavy but shouldn't be persistent," Mr Marsters said.
The large ridge of high pressure responsible for the cooler conditions will then slowly move east.
The region looks set for a break from the rain tomorrow, with clear conditions forecast up until Sunday.
The temperature is set to reach 21C on Thursday, with only light winds forecast.
