Napier man Warrick Tutt does not normally do the supermarket thing on a weekday.
Nor does he do it at 8am, or ever get it done and dusted in two minutes.
But he was more than happy yesterday as he hobbled around the Pak'nSave Tamatea supermarket, avoiding the usual rush times but putting up with a crook back, in a chance to grab $1500 worth of free groceries.
As it happened, the delight was mutual for store owners and operators Andrew Graney and Darryn Turley who could not have been more pleased with the winner of their Pak'nSave 30th anniversary grocery grab draw.
Mr Tutt, of Greenmeadows, is a solo dad with two kids.
"It was a huge surprise," he said.
"I'm not someone who wins a lot of things - just a single dad with a part-time job trying to make ends meet."
He was "amazed" on several fronts. When he got the call from Mr Graney. "I thought I'd just won a ham."
He was amazed when staff responded to the difficulty he had grabbing $530 worth of groceries in the two minutes allotted, no more than two items of each at a time, and set about helping him make sure he got the full $1500 - with 5-year-old son Jesse getting his torch and daughter Piper, 4, her toothbrush.
He had however got off to a good start, heading straight for the meat display and grabbing two legs of ham, followed by two each of a variety of other cuts.
All were "amazed" at the success of the promotion, with thousands of entries gathered in just a fortnight and filling eight large cardboard boxes.
The promotion was part of an anniversary marking 30 years since the first Pak'nSave store opened in Kaitaia in 1985.
