Napier has scooped the pool in the Cancer Society's Daffodil Day "Paint the Town Yellow" window-dressing competition.
Emerson St business Divine Things, which opened eight weeks ago, won the first prize, including a $750 advertising package from Hawke's Bay Today, while the runner-up was Tennyson St retailer Poppets and Linens to Love, and third place went to Red Peach Gallery, Ahuriri.
Divine Things owner Justine Walker, merchandise manager Sara Boyce and retail assistant Amy Weller modified three parasols and made up about 200 yellow paper flowers to create the winning display.
"It was about a week of nights," she said.
"We had lots of fun."
The umbrellas and flowers will be sold during the Daffodil Day nationwide appeal today and weekend shopping tomorrow.
"I've had family members and close friends go from cancer, so we are pleased to contribute in any way we can," Ms Weller said.
The promotion was a prelude to the 25th annual Daffodil Day national appeal, which has raised more than $15 million over the years towards the society goals of reducing the incidence and impact of cancer through its support and information services, health promotion and research.
Society Hawke's Bay centre manager Trudy Kirk said more than 60 Napier and Hastings businesses took part, and judges Penny Maiden and Jacqui Cane were impressed with the strong messages winners included in their creations.
