A picturesque piece of the Ahuriri coastline named after a not-so-picturesque slice of its history is set for a name change.
Perfume Point, on the eastern spit of Ahuriri, is listed on websites and even Napier City Council maps of the area, but as the council site declares the name is a "whimsical" one, as it was applied by locals simply because the area once housed a sewer outfall.
It is now set to receive an official name from the New Zealand Geographic Board (NZGB) as part of seven name proposals for places around the North Island.
If adopted, the area will officially become East Pier Point.
The public has until August 28 to make a submission.
Wendy Shaw, secretary of the NZGB, said at this stage there had been only one objection to the proposed new name.
She said following all processes, and if the new name became official, it would be shown on maps and charts as they were updated and Crown agencies would be required to use the official name "in their products and websites".
However, she said private businesses which used the unofficial name as part of their organisation's name would not be required to change it.
The site goes back to between 1910 and 1915 when the council of the day built a system of sewage disposal using several pumps which concentrated that disposal at one point.
In 1973 a new outfall and pipeline was opened at Awatoto.
