A worldwide event, involving more than 400 locations, to raise awareness surrounding climate change and divert energy use from fossil fuels was held in Hawke's Bay.
Hastings joined the world rally, as part of Global Divestment Day on Saturday as people marched through the City Mall encouraging people and institutions to divert funds from fossil fuel investments and into renewable energy sources.
"It's as simple as this: It's not an investment if it's wrecking the planet," rally organiser Sarah Millington said. "To really solve the climate crisis, it's time to end the age of fossil fuels."
About 30 people stood in the Hastings fountain to highlight their concerns about the fossil fuel industry's contribution to climate change and sea level rise.
"We are concerned about climate change and sea level rise. It will have a massive impact on Hawke's Bay people.
"Where will our grandchildren live?" Ms Millington said.
"Where will they grow their food?
"Global Divestment Day focuses on the future of New Zealand by challenging consumers, businesses and governments to move away from fossil fuels," Ms Millington said.
"We urge the NZ Superannuation Fund to divest the $676 million it has invested in fossil fuel companies and invest our money into clean energy and energy-efficiency technologies - these are the growth areas.
"Fossil fuel investment is a dead end street."
