Hawke's Bay cyclist Hannah van Kampen was shouting some mates a feed of fish and chips last night.
Van Kampen, 21, could afford to - she'd just collected $680 in prizemoney for winning the open women's title in The Hub Three-Day Tour which ended yesterday. The rest of the money would be spent on paying off the balance owed on a new bike.
The Heinz Wattie's Ltd worker had to wait until yesterday's final two laps on the three-lap 78km Ngatarawa Wines stage 3 to secure her second tour title in as many years.
"I rode away from the bunch at the start of the second lap and rode the final two laps by myself. I gave it my all and some self belief worked for me," van Kampen said as she reflected on her 7m 24s victory on the stage and 7m 13s victory over workmate Kerri-anne Page for overall honours. Page was aiming for a fourth and second consecutive title.
A fifth year rider, van Kampen pointed out she and Page were one of three Hawke's Bay riders to have turns with the yellow jersey during the weekend. Jo Holdaway, who finished 8m 20s behind van Kampen, completed the trifecta for the host province.
Van Kampen will compete in the Morrinsville-based Bev May tour as well as the Wairarapa-based Trust House Tour of New Zealand from February 18-22, which is the third event of the 2015 UCI Women's Cycling Calendar.
Manawatu 17-year-old Robert Stannard never relinquished the yellow jersey on his way to a three-second victory over Masterton's Jack Sowry for the open men's title.
Sowry displayed the benefits of a four-week training stint in the Bay with defending champion Josh Page who withdrew during Saturday's stage 2.
Wellington Masters grade rider David Rowlands finished third overall, 28 seconds behind Stannard. Waipukurau 16-year-old Corbin Mason-Smith did the best of the Hawke's Bay starters in the open men's field with a 23rd placing.
Clive 16-year-old Sam Thorpe-Loversuch was another to retain a yellow jersey for the entire tour.
The Karamu High School student beat Palmerston North's Carlos Lopez-Lozano by 24s as he claimed B grade honours.
Tauranga's Cullen Browne finished 30s behind Thorpe-Loversuch in third place.
A 20s time penalty for incorrect tag display cost Napier's Duncan Wallace the C grade men's title. He finished 6s behind Upper Hutt's Nigel Page.
