Hawke's Bay's first baby of the year will be sharing birthday celebrations with her aunty.
Mother Staci Watson brought her mother Mou and ten-year-old sister Repeti, who was also born on January 1, to Ata Rangi Maternity Unit at Hawke's Bay Hospital for the birth of her second child.
Bringing her mother to the maternity unit was a good choice - Kora Ainai Atarangi Wiringi is Mou Watson's 22nd grandchild.
It took just 41 minutes for Kora to be born naturally at 1.05am, allowing proud father Jarard to join them "just in time", following babysitting duties with their 15-month-old child.
A minor complication means Kora needs to stay in the neighbouring Special Care Baby Unit, but otherwise the 2.4kg baby is thriving, despite being born two weeks ahead of schedule.
"She didn't feel like a little baby," Ms Watson said.
Her first baby screamed immediately at birth and she was concerned Kora did not.
"I said, there is something wrong with her - why is she quiet? But I think she is just a content baby."
