The streets of central Taradale will be alive with children parading on bicycles - very decorated bicycles - this Saturday as the first in what organisers hope will become an annual Christmas season event takes place.
"It's something we have been thinking about for a while - something which will bring kids and parents into the community for a bit of colour and a bit of fun," event organiser Graham Duncan from the Rotary Club of Taradale said.
The Decorated Bikes Competition and Parade will be a showcase of the imagination of children (and parent helpers) in making their bicycles look a little more festive and sparkling than usual.
"We are hoping for a good turn-out and if it all comes off well we'll do it again," Mr Duncan said.
The Rotary Club has sent flyers out to schools across Napier, Taradale, Puketapu and Esk Valley - to encourage children up to the age of 13 to decorate their bikes and be part of the parade.
As well as being able to show off their eye-catching work the youngsters, in two age categories, will be up for a string of spot prizes, the top ones being a brand new boy's bike or girl's bike, as well as new helmets.
Mr Duncan said the youngsters, accompanied by a pipe band and led by a police escort, will ride two abreast on their creations from Taradale Park after an 8.30am assembly and the giving out of numbers (for judging) and through the central Gloucester St shopping precinct starting at 9.30am.
There will be a gold coin entry to take part.
They will ride through the main street, do a U-turn, and return to finish at the Village Market where the bikes will be lined up for display, and judging.
Bands and buskers, and a sausage barbecue, will be part of the morning's festive fun.
"And Santa will be there too of course," Mr Duncan said.
