The Hastings RSA sale of land to the Countdown supermarket chain has gone through, allowing it to amalgamate with the nearby Heretaunga Club.
The RSA has more members than Heretaunga, but Heretaunga has a larger premises which will undergo a multi-million-dollar refurbishment.
The 3500-member RSA received an offer of $3.3 million for its Avenue Rd West site from its supermarket neighbour.
Members voted to sell and to join the 855-member Heretaunga Club but the timing of the physical move was uncertain, with gaming, liquor licensing and building consents to be arranged.
"We are still working things out," RSA president Trevor Hardie said.
The RSA boosted its membership last year by amalgamating with the Hibernian Club. The Hibernian had 600 members but only 100 were active and it was in slow decline.
An application to transfer the Hibernian's pokie machine licence was successful and the RSA now has the maximum allowable number of machines, 30, one of only five clubs in the country with the maximum amount.
Last week, Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule met residents concerned about Countdown buying land between Havelock North and Hastings that had been designated for future residential housing.
Two sections on Havelock Rd have been purchased by the Australia-owned supermarket chain, which said an adjoining four-hectare section had been secured.
