Young basketballers from mixed backgrounds are aiming for their biggest goal yet - the chance to experience America.
Paul Henare and Paora Winitana's IMS Payroll Basketball Academy selects elite teenage basketball players and helps guide them to success - on and off the court.
Regardless of their personal circumstances the players are pushed to exceed personal, educational and sporting potential.
That includes living by a strict code of conduct, which prepares them to step up as future leaders.
More than 120 athletes, split between academies in Hastings and Napier, have spent three years preparing for a 2014 International Eye Open Experience (EOE).
Now they must raise funds for a three-week trip to America, where they will meet NBA teams, observe trainings, and attend basketball skill sessions. They will also have the opportunity to compete in front of top US high school basketball teams and talent scouts.
It is estimated each player will need to put $4000 towards flights, accommodation, NBA game tickets, food and team apparel.
A fundraiser, featuring special guest Jeff Wilson, will be held at The Heretaunga Club on Friday, October 10 from 6.30pm to help boost the coffers.
Tickets cost $70 per person and are available by emailing: info@basketballacademy.co.nz
