A 65-year-old man is in a stable condition in hospital after he was attacked by a bull on a farm in Pourerere, Central Hawke's Bay.
The Lowe Corporation rescue helicopter crew responded to the incident in a set of cattle yards at the southern end of Pourerere Rd, about 2.30pm yesterday.
St John shift manager Grant Gray said the man was in the cattle yards when a bull knocked him over and "had a go at him", while he was on the ground.
He received moderate chest injuries.
Mr Gray said the man was conscious and coherent when emergency services arrived.
A road ambulance arrived from Waipukurau, followed by the rescue helicopter.
The man was with his wife and a farm worker. It was not known whether the incident happened at his residence.
He was airlifted to Hawke's Bay Hospital.
A hospital spokeswoman said he was in a stable condition last night.
Mr Gray said the attacking bull was described as weighing about 500kg.
The man told emergency services: "That one's off to the works."
