A Havelock North building has shared the supreme award at this year's East Coast Region Registered Master Builders, House of the Year.
The building complex shared the prize with a renovation in Gisborne.
Havelock North's Welch Builders & Construction took out seven regional awards, including a gold award and the Carters New Homes $1-$2 million category, as well as the Registered Master Builders Supreme Award for House of the Year. The company also received the Craftsmanship Award, Heart of the Home Kitchen Award, Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence Award and the Resene Sustainable Home Award.
Gisborne's Currie Construction was awarded the East Coast Region Registered Master Builders Supreme Award for Renovation of the Year, as well as the Renovation Award up to $250,000. The company also won the Future-Proof Building Renovation Award over $500,000 with another Gisborne entry.
The judges said Welch Builders & Construction's winning home was a complicated build on a very exposed site, sitting in the hills above Havelock North.
"This was a complex build and design that fostered a range of challenges for the builder. An unusual brief, this home was built for two families who wanted the option of being able to live autonomously or as separate families," they said.
"Fully clad in a combination of different cedars, the mix of timbers helps a cutting edge, contemporary home sit nicely in its surrounding landscape. Contrasting rich, dark cedar with a lighter cedar tone for the main cladding, this home feels like it is meant to be there.
"The end result and impeccable workmanship is a tribute to a great building company that consistently excels."
Currie Construction's renovation impressed judges, who said it succeeded in maintaining the existing exterior character while modernising the living area.
"This was a clever alteration that opened up the living space and outdoor living, as well as providing a modern kitchen. "With beautifully crafted timber windows, doors and flooring, and workmanship of a very high standard, this is a renovation the builder should be proud of."
The results were announced at a gala dinner on July 5, at Quality Hotel Emerald & Conference Centre in Gisborne.
There were seven gold award winners from the East Coast region, which will now be assessed alongside winners from across the country to find the National Gold Reserve finalists, to be announced in early September.
National category winners, Registered Master Builders Supreme Awards for Renovation of the Year and House of the Year will be announced at a gala dinner in Auckland in November.
