Winter winds and rain will remind people that spring doesn't officially start until Sunday as a cold southerly envelopes the region by midday today.
After yesterday's snapshot of spring, with temperatures reaching 20C in Hastings and 17C in Napier, Hawke's Bay can expect rain and cold southerlies to signal the final days of winter.
A high of 15C can be expected in Napier today with 16C in Hastings.
MetService media and communications meteorologist Daniel Corbett said after having some wonderful weather over the past few days the country will have one little brief spell of cold weather as mother nature gives us another wintry blast.
"A cold southerly will force its way up the lower North Island today and you will certainly notice it in Hawke's Bay by the second half of today.
"Temperatures will drop in the evening and on Friday you will certainly notice it overnight, as it drops to 5-6C. During the day it may only get up to 11C or 12C. People will certainly feel as if it's winter again. There is a chance the Napier-Taupo road will receive a brief light dusting of snow down to 700 metres. There is also a road snowfall warning for the Desert Rd."
He said over the weekend the southeasterly flow will help keep the threat of cloud and showers over the region. However, the weather will improve next week.
