Police have appealed for a man who tried to intervene in the prolonged public assault of a woman at the weekend to come forward.
The female victim and her partner were walking from Todd St, down Nelson Crescent and on to Latham St between 8.30am and 9.15am on Sunday when the man started assaulting her.
Napier police constable Grant Marshall said another man, wearing black jeans and an orange Tui cap, tried to intervene at the intersection of Douglas Mclean Ave and Latham St. Police hoped to speak to him and any others who may have seen the incident.
"The male offender sort of stepped him out, so he took off, and then they continued on their way," Mr Marshall said.
"It was physical and very verbal, and it was quite prolonged because it took pretty much most [of] that distance.
"She has some minor injuries, but this is a couple with a bit of family violence history."
The offender was arrested and appeared in Napier District Court yesterday.
The Good Samaritan was described as a male Maori, aged between 20 and 30.
If you know him, contact Constable Scott Munro at Napier Police on 831 0700.
