Ann's lucky ticket wins Oz trip

By Roger Moroney

Last weekend Napier's Ann Clarke went shopping and bought her husband a shirt.

It wasn't a bad purchase at all as she found out on Monday morning when she took a phone call to say that the little 'City on Sale' ticket she filled out had been drawn from 15,000 others and it had her name on it.

Which means she, and three others, will be treated to free Air New Zealand flights to Melbourne and four nights' accommodation.

Until that moment it had been just another Monday - the start of another working week. A touch of Mondayitis to deal with.

"But hey, my spirit kind of changed after that," Mrs Clarke said after gathering her thoughts.

"I've not really ever won anything before... just a few little minor division Lotto prizes, that's all."

However, she did have one slight nagging regret and that was as she filled out the ticket as part of the purchase there was a family in front of her and they were filling theirs out after buying something from the participating shop.

"I could hear their kids saying how much they'd like to go on a big holiday."

But luck is luck, and if there was anyone to thank it would arguably be her husband. "I said to him that morning you need a new shirt. He's not a young fella so I had to look for something suitable he could wear to the gym."

She happened to call into a clothing shop which was one of the 83 stores taking part in the fifth annual mid-winter 'City on Sale' promotion and spotted "something suitable".

So, given the purchase was the lucky one, would hubby be one of the three companions she would take with her to Melbourne early next year? "Oh I might take him," she laughed.

For Mrs Clarke it was the win of a lifetime, for doing something she enjoyed. "I love shopping - just ask my husband - he'll tell you all about my wardrobe."
