Ormondville's Jim Harland was on the spot when the first train crossed the repaired rail line at Makotuku on Thursday.
The line had been closed to trains since early the previous Sunday, after rain washed out ground, leaving the line suspended in mid-air.
Crews worked around the clock to repair the damage and completed the job at 1pm on Thursday. The first train went across an hour later.
"The train, which was heading towards Dannevirke from the Port of Napier, had 31 carriages, and if you look carefully [at the picture] you can see the train crossing over the line, which has track balloons attached," Mr Harland said.
