A first-time fundraiser for child cancer was a sell-out success and has opened up possibilities for a larger-scale event next year.
Style for a Cause was dreamed up by a dedicated team at Head High Hair Design in Hastings, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to organise an auction and fashion show displaying the latest trends in clothing, hair and footwear.
Far from being a superficial spectacle, the evening at Hastings Community Arts centre brought home harsh realities of child cancer and reiterated the importance of the cause.
"It actually exceeded our expectations," salon owner Leanne Kommeren said. "I think the highlight of the evening was Paige [a young cancer survivor], she really pulled on people's heart strings, seeing the beads around her neck and understanding what they stand for was very special."
With so much support and many people showing their encouragement for the concept, Mrs Kommeren said another event was definitely on the cards.
"It's going to be an annual thing, I have spoken to Linda Walsh [from the Child Cancer Foundation] and we are looking to form a committee which will work from December to deliver something bigger and better, with more funds going into the homes of these children."
In total, Monday's event raised $8255 for the Child Cancer Foundation's Hawke's Bay branch, which will go toward providing support and practical help to local children and their families. Fundraising and Business Development Manager Linda Walsh, described the contribution as, "amazing".
