Police have arrested and charged a 17-year-old youth in relation to a series of burglaries in the Hastings area and are hoping to return some of the items they have recovered.
Constable Tim Rowe said members of the public alerted local police to the youth when they saw him attempting to break into a car on Whitehead Rd in Hastings about 1.30am on June 26.
Police searched his backpack and found the brooch (pictured) along with items linking him to a number of burglaries throughout Hastings and Havelock North.
A further search of his property resulted in the discovery of more stolen items, some of which have been returned already.
Mr Rowe said it did not appear the man had been targeting any items in particular and had a variety of things, from knives to in car navigators, in his possession.
"He's just been taking anything of value. He's been targeting unlocked cars and garden sheds. We want to make it very clear people need to lock their cars, even if they are in the driveway."
The young man has been charged with burglary, unlawful interference and possession of an offensive weapon.
He is also facing charges for other matters and will come before the courts on July 9.
