"The naughty boys tried burning down the butchers shop," says Taradale fire service senior station officer Dennis Bristow.
The fire service were called to a small room behind Taradale Quality Meats (pictured) at 1.32am on Saturday morning, where sawdust on the floor had been set alight.
"Luckily we got to it before it did any serious damage."
The volunteers were again called to the site at 8.52pm after reports of more smoke.
Police are investigating.
The Havelock North and Rural Fire Brigade services were called to Waimarama at 2.03 am on Sunday after a report from Te Mata Peak that flames were visible.
A brigade spokesman said the fire appeared to have reignited in an old quarry.
