Hawke's Bay's family doctors, nurses and community health providers are achieving some of the best primary health targets in the country.

When compared to New Zealand's 19 other district health board regions, Hawke's Bay is the best in the country for 2-year old vaccinations for the high needs population, and second for total population - up five places in three months. Hawke's Bay was ranked second for diabetes detection and follow-up for high needs and fourth for total population. "We've also made great progress with cervical screening moving up four places to the sixth for total population and fifth for high needs."
One of the biggest improvements has been heart checks, which is a key focus for the region as it works towards reaching the Government's cardiovascular disease risk assessment target of 95 per cent of the total population who are defined as at risk. "We are now second in the country for heart checks with high needs patients at 66 per cent and fourth for total population at 65 per cent."
