Police believe a driver's inattention caused her car to leave the road and land on its side in a steep ditch on Lawn Rd, early yesterday.
The woman was believed to have been heading towards Hastings from Haumoana about 7.45am when she failed to notice a line of slowing traffic and locked up the brakes on her car trying to avoid a collision.
"It appears she was following traffic, which was slowing down for a tractor beetling along on the side of the road, she hasn't realised everyone was slowing and then tried to brake too quickly. The car locked up and swerved into the ditch," Hawke's Bay Road Policing Sergeant Clint Adamson said.
The middle-aged woman was transported to Hawke's Bay Hospital by St John Ambulance with a sore arm and wrist. A hospital spokesperson confirmed she was later discharged.
It was not the first crash of its kind on that stretch of road, and Mr Adamson wanted to remind others to stay alert while driving. "I guess the message here is to look far enough ahead of you."
