Alleged pepper spray man in court

Name suppression has lapsed for a man alleged to have used his girlfriend and her one-year-old son as human shields against police pepper spray.

Zane Korari Mete Lewis, 22, appeared in the Hastings District Court today. He has been charged with resisting police and escaping police custody. Further charges are expected to be laid in relation to the incident which occurred on April 8.

Lewis did not enter a plea and has been remanded in custody to appear again on April 30. His lawyer Amit Malik had previously indicated said his client denied the allegation he used the child and girlfriend as human shields.

Lewis allegedly became violent during an incident with police at his Waipawa home. Police said his girlfriend and her son took the full force of the pepper spray after they were thrust in front of him during the altercation. He was later tasered trying to escape from the address and taken into police custody.
