Air bags critical at crunch time

Police take a statement from a witness to determine what caused a van to crash into a power pole on Pakowhai Rd in Hastings about 5pm yesterday.

A witness told Hawke's Bay Today the driver of the van was saved by the vehicle's air bags which were activated on impact. It was believed the driver, a man, escaped with just a scratch on his knee. He was seen by St John Ambulance Service staff at the scene who determined there was no need for him to go to hospital for further treatment.

Power lines company Unison Networks said the crash did not cause any power outages. The company's lines staff were at the crash scene, near the Ten Twenty Four restaurant, until late yesterday trying to determine when the pole could be replaced.
