Green masses celebrate

Hundreds of revellers packed pubs and bars at the weekend to mark St Patrick's Day, dressed in green, drinking Guinness and listening to festive Irish music.

The Rose and Shamrock in Havelock North had provided marquees in anticipation of their emerald guests, with up to 110 people packing the bar at once, said security guard Brian Harmer. Among them were Kate McKinnon, Nathan Pipi, and Jessica Pipi (pictured)

"We're playing a lot of Irish music and everybody has just been really happy and drinking," he said.

"There's been quite a few people turn up in green and we have got a few local Irish bands playing."
