A new library at a Hawke's Bay school has been built by skills within the community.
Taikura Rudolf Steiner School in Hastings this week celebrated the opening of its new library built by members of the school community with business and trade expertise.
School community liaison co-ordinator Vanessa van Kampen said the project re-housed the library from an old 1950s bungalow to a new, purpose-built facility.
"While the project was led by a registered builder, the school engaged their own project manger who enlisted the help of many volunteers from within the school community," she said.
"Parents, past parents and even some pupils who gave their business and trade expertise along with man and woman power.
"Hours upon hours of gifted time has meant the library has been brought to fruition within a tight budget."
The building was opened on Monday with guest speaker and writer Kate de Goldi, who encouraged pupils to use the new library to discover the world of books.
