Woman killed in Napier crash


A young woman was killed when the car she was a passenger in hit a tree in Napier last night.

The crash occurred on Awatoto Rd, Meeanee, about 11.40pm when the 18-year-old male driver lost control of his vehicle, which travelled through a stop sign and across an intersection before hitting the tree, police said.

The 18-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

All three occupants of the vehicle had to be cut from the wreckage.

The driver and a 15-year-old male passenger were taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital. The extent of their injuries was not known.

Police are investigating and urged anyone who witnessed the crash to contact them.
