Hawke's Bay realtor Simon Tremain's triathlon strategy is simple: Make a break from the field and "hang in there".

Mr Tremain is one of the first to admit he has a competitive streak, and says he will give it everything when he participates in the 1700m kayaking leg of the 2013 Tremain's Corporate Triathlon.

The triathlon, which Hawke's Bay Today helps sponsor, has become a key event in the Hawke's Bay summer calendar since Tremain Real Estate began supporting it in 1995.

Teams of three must compete in a 600m swim or 1700m kayak, 20km bike ride and 5km run/walk in the March 17 event.

As director of Tremain Real Estate, the competition's naming sponsor, Mr Tremain is preparing for his role in the race with the help of Hawke's Bay triathlete Ali Hollington.

"We've been doing it since 1995 when my brother and I came back into the business," he said. "We just thought it was a really good day, good occasion, and a good opportunity to get people out of work and participate."

The 2012 event saw more than 1100 competitors last year and local triathlon club development manager Brendon Lodge said he was expecting to see just as many this year. To enter online, grab a few workmates or get some friends together and go to www.tremainstriathlon.co.nz.

"It's just a great fixture in the Hawke's Bay summer calendar now, and it's great that we can support it," Mr Tremain said.
