Escaper given nine months' jail

A Hawke's Bay man who escaped from Waipukurau holding cells and spent more than a week on the run has escaped custody again, only this time with much less success.

In 2009 Angus Dodunski, now aged 22, escaped from the Waipukurau District Court holding cells, 20 minutes into a nine-month prison term for burglary. Dodunski appeared in Hastings District Court yesterday facing multiple charges.

His more recent attempted escape occurred when he was confronted by police officers after a domestic violence incident on Boxing Day.

He had been drinking in Waipukurau with his partner when they got into an argument. When she attempted to leave, he dragged her across the road. Police were called and arrested him for breaching a protection order but he broke free and ran off, only to be quickly caught again. He spat at one officer as well as kicked another. Judge Claire Ryan sentenced Dodunski to nine months and three weeks' jail on nine charges.
